A comparative study on antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli isolates

... from Austrian patients and wastewater-influenced Danube River water and biofilms

Researchers from the Division of Water Quality and Health at the KL, the Institute of Microbiology and Hygiene at the KL University Hospital in St. Pölten, the Vienna University of Technology and the Medical Universities of Vienna and Graz investigated the behaviour of a specific type of bacteria, namely E. coli to better understand antiobiotic resistance and its spread in the environment. The scientists compared samples from patients in Lower Austria with water samples from the Danube, also taken in Lower Austria. Samples were collected from outpatients and inpatients with urinary tract infections or from a catheter. Both water samples and biofilms were isolated from the Danube. The work was supported by the Gesellschaft für Forschungsförderung Niederösterreich (GFF). It has been published open access in the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health.
