Erasmus+ Medical Clinical Internships Abroad (Bachelor & Master)

Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL) welcomes and supports student mobility.

Students need to apply to KL in advance in order to obtain approval for the Erasmus+ Internship. An internship abroad can only take place at an institution accredited by KL. The accreditation of the foreign training institution follows the same guidelines that are also applied at KL. Bilateral agreements have already been concluded with the University of Basel and others are in the pipeline. KL can send Erasmus+ students to the University of Basel as well as host Erasmus+ students from the University of Basel.

Recommended timing for Erasmus+ Mobility:
KL recommends that students elect semesters 3-5 in the Bachelor's programme in Medical Sciences or any semester throughout the Master's programme in Human Medicine, as during these periods teaching takes place in small groups at clinics. The third year of the Master's programme is organized as a practical year (PY).

Student mobility during the Practical Year (PY) of the Master's programme in Human Medicine:
The most suitable arrangement for planned internships abroad are longer clinical clerkships (these are possible in the third year of the Bachelor's programme in Medical Science) or a trimester in the practical year (PY) of the Master's programme in Human Medicine. This type of student mobility falls under "mobility for traineeship abroad" in the Erasmus+ program.

The PY of the Master of Human Medicine is the best period for student mobility. During the PY of the Master of Human Medicine a maximum of 2 of the 3 trimesters or a maximum of 4 of the 6 sub-elements (in total max. 30 weeks of the PY) can be completed abroad at accredited university hospitals or their teaching hospitals. Students can choose the subjects and the content to be completed abroad, as long as curricular learning objectives are met. At the end of a trimester, the written and oral trimester examinations must be completed at KL.
